MOISIE RIVER: Nahanni of the East
Running down the Labrador Plateau
Each
year Missinaibi Headwaters offers a special expedition, one to challenge
the skills and stamina experienced paddlers against some of
the worlds most spectacular rivers.
The
Moisie has a well deserved reputation among
canoeists as the most stunningly beautiful river in Eastern North
America. From its source high in Labrador, the Moisie drops an incredible
2000 feet. Most of this is through a massive canyon, where the wall
rises to a tower almost a thousand feet above the river. Incredible
water falls and gorges, long, difficult and challenging portages,
world class Atlantic Salmon, endless big water rapids....this is
a must-do river for any serious wilderness paddler.
|
Note:
This special trip is open only available as a Custom Trip in 2005,
and to participants whom we deem have the experience and physical
skills necessary to tackle this demanding expedition. Participants
should be in very good physical condition, able to manage difficult
portages and enjoy running Class III whitewater.
We plan
to run a scheduled trip again in the near future, so let us know
if you are interested for 2006, or consider this year's expeditions
on the Leaf River, or the Rupert
River

Trip Itinerary
DAY 1: Sept Iles- Moisie River
We fly from Sept-Iles to the river over the stunning mountains
of the Labrador Plateau. Depending on the trip length, we'll
choose a suitable landing spot on one of the few slow sections
of the river. The area near the Pekans River is our usual
spot.
DAY 2 -6: Canyons 1-2
The moment we leave our first camp, the river grabs us, and
doesn't let go. A couple of days into the trip we enter the
first of five canyons. The rapids in this first canyon are
big, powerful and technical. The short liftover on the boulder's
is equally as challenging. The second canyon, with its bear
rock cliffs and rounded mountain tops ends at Fish Ladder
Portage.
DAY 7-10: Lower Canyons
The portage at the Fish Ladder is not the high point of the
trip, but a necessary evil. The grueling trail enters the
river at one of the most technical rapids, then the calm of
the third canyon. Portages are few and far between now, and
the river's current pushes at 10 miles per hour, on the flat
water! Canyon 4 reveals one of the greatest campsites in the
world, where 5different waterfalls can be seen spilling into
the canyon.
DAY 11-12: Trestle Rapids
After a wide slow part of the river, the final narrowing is
big and pushy with C-III-IV waves on the runnable part. The
rapids end as the Moisie passes under the Labrador North Shore
Rail line, and its a quiet paddle to the takeout near the
Gulf of St Lawrence. |
