ORCA Moving Water Level 1 Course

Missinaibi Headwaters specializes in canoe instruction courses which focus on whitewater canoe tripping. With 8000 kilometers of guiding experience, ORCA Level III Moving Water Instructor and Programme Director David Morin teaches the skills and techniques required to paddle wilderness rivers safely, without sacrificing the fun.

As an Ontario Recreational Canoe Association / Canadian Recreational Canoe Association (CRCA) course, students will learn eddy turns, ferries, river reading and scouting, rescues, and a bit of playing, all using Ontario's finest paddling rivers as a classroom.

Courses and Clinics are offered as private courses, or custom group instruction, and can be located on the most convienient river.

Sample Course Itinerary for Weekend Course

FRIDAY EVENING: Meet at Wilderness Adventure Lodge
ARRIVAL, WELCOME, INTRODUCTIONS, COURSE OUTLINE,
& SAFETY MESSAGES (BRING REFRESHMENTS!)

SATURDAY

FLAT WATER STROKES: draw, cross-draw, pry, forward and reverse sweep,
forward power, "J" stroke, "C" stroke, stern pry, high and low braces
PIVOTS UNDER POWER
CANOE OVER CANOE RESCUE & SWIM WITH PFD
RIVER READING: pillows, eddies, sweepers, holes, hydraulics, standing waves, curling waves, etc.
FERRIES & EDDY TURNS :. Eddy Turns: "C" turns, "S" turns
PRACTICE AND COACHING, VIDEO TAPING (1:15 - 5:00)

DINNER, VIDEO ANALYSIS (8:00-9:00)

SUNDAY: Depending on weather condition, individual travel plans and confidence, we may choose to remain at the Upper River on Sunday and work in the lower sets, or to run the river to Lake Temiskaming. Items introduced and practised will be:
BACK FERRIES, THROW BAG TOSS, FRONT SURFING, PORTAGING, LINING, SELF-RESCUE, AND MORE...
