Pukaskwa River

May 20-28, 2006 Skill: Advanced

A wilderness trip to rival all! For its 80 km length, this incredible river plunges nearly 500 feet, through rock gorges and chasms, over spectacular waterfalls and drop-pool rapids, to finally empty into the icy waters of Lake Superior. Since this river is only runnable a few weeks each spring, it is a rarely traveled gem. If this isn't enough to get you thinking about a paddling adventure, then take another look at the films and books of Bill Mason. In his opinion, the Pukaskwa wilderness could be the most beautiful place in Ontario, perhaps Canada! Now, add to the mix fantastic brook trout fishing, great food, and an instructional canoe trip, led by MHO's director and whitewater instructor David Morin (this is his favorite river too).

An exciting adventure for those looking to experience one of our favorite rivers.

Trip Itinerary

DAY 1
On the Saturday evening, we will meet at the lodge of our partner, Naturally Superior Adventures, go over the maps and take care of last minute preparations. In the morning, we board the van for the backroad shuttle to the river. Our first camp is made nearby on a quieter stretch of the river where we encounter our first rapids, which are used for teaching and practising whitewater manoeuvres. Play time is considered work time here, and we work to make sure everyone is ready for the river ahead.
DAY 2 -5
This is where things really get moving. The pace of the river increases, and numerous ledges, drops and chutes are negotiated. Since the portages are barely existent, we opt to run everything that we can safely, while lining or walking the rest. Our days on the river are short, as this river challenges our physical and mental limits, and there is a successful relief in eddying in at the day's end. The entrance to Ringham's gorge marks our arrival at the next section of the adventure.
DAY 6-8
Now, we get to experience the true test of the Pukaskwa. The river picks up its pace as it narrows through the gorge. Depending on the water level, we may opt to run and line the gorge. From here, an exciting run brings us to Schist Falls, then to shore of Lake Superior. A fishing tug will meet the group to transport us back to Wawa, but an optional self-guided paddle on Lake Superior can be considered for those who have the time and skill.
